In 2025, Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion is proposing to create a Philadelphia chapter of the Victorian Society in America, a national organization that celebrates nineteenth-century material culture, architecture, and history.

Philadelphia had a VSA chapter for many years, and scores of members of the national organization remain in the region. This proposed partnership will build on that history as well as Philadelphia’s collection of Victorian buildings, neighborhoods, and art.

The VSA is an internationally recognized organization that works to educate about the unique, fascinating history of the era, preserve its surviving architecture, and celebrate the cultural treasures that survive from the nineteenth century.

Maxwell Mansion, Philadelphia’s museum of nineteenth-century everyday life, will offer office space and program support to the chapter, share its varied programs with members, and co-sponsor programs in the future. Our hope is to create a Philadelphia Summer School, to join other important VSA programs in Newport, London, and Chicago. Philadelphia’s rich tapestry of surviving Victorian architecture, from homes to department stores to city offices, could draw interest from enthusiasts from around the world.
