SUMMARY:Victorian Book Club - Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
DESCRIPTION:“I wish\, as well as everybody else\, to be perfectly happy; but\, like everybody else\, it must be in my own way.” \nPublished in 1811 and deeply beloved in the Victorian era\, Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility continues to delight readers today. The novel follows the three Dashwood sisters – Elinor\, Marianne\, and Margaret – as they come of age. Having to move away from their childhood home with their widowed mother\, the sisters experience love\, romance\, heartbreak\, and reconciliation in different ways. Austen’s book asks the question of the reader: Which is the more satisfying path through life – acting with sense\, or with sensibility?

SUMMARY:Victorian Book Club - Hard Times by Charles Dickens
DESCRIPTION:“Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in life. Plant nothing else\, and root out everything else.” \nCharles Dickens’s Hard Times: For These Times tells a story about honoring the value of the human heart in an age of materialism and social injustice. It takes place in Coketown\, where Mr. Thomas Gradgrind feeds his pupils and his family with facts\, banning imagination and wonder from young minds. Consequently\, his obedient daughter Louisa becomes trapped in a loveless marriage\, and his son Tom rebels to become embroiled in crime. As their fortunes cross with an array of colorful characters\, including a free-spirited circus girl and a victimized mill worker\, Gradgrind is forced to question everything he believes in. Although written in 1854\, this remains one of the most relevant novels Dickens ever created and still speaks to today’s world.

SUMMARY:The Victorian Palette
DESCRIPTION:Join Concetta Martone\, Ph.D. on ZOOM \nColors are all around us. They are inherent to the natural world but also man-made. They speak to us directly when revealing details about the nature of objects\, subliminally when invoking moods and eliciting emotions\, and aesthetically when delighting us with their beauty. Color is an essential element of the visual arts\, and artists and designers have employed it to serve a wide range of aesthetic and symbolic purposes. Attitudes to color have changed through time\, and understanding the significance of color in a specific era means understanding its relationship with the larger cultural context. In this talk\, Concetta will explore the historical dimension of color as it applies to British art and design at the time of Queen Victoria. The discussion will focus on the innovations and traditions that contributed to the re-evaluation of color as a powerful means of revelation. The works of artists and designers will serve as evidence of the eclectic and multifaceted character of the Victorians’ experience of the power of color.

SUMMARY:Haunted History of Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:As one of the most historic cities in the nation\, the City of Brotherly Love is a haven for unexplained phenomena. The specter of an innocent waiter murdered in 1781 is sometimes seen smashing dishes and breaking glasses at the City Tavern\, once a meeting place for George Washington\, Paul Revere\, and other patriots. Anguished screams and haunting footsteps are still heard among the cellblocks of Eastern State Penitentiary. Among the picturesque streets of Chestnut Hill sits Baleroy Mansion\, whose plethora of supernatural hosts has earned the home the nickname as “the most haunted home in America.” Author Josh Hitchens details the spooky stories of Philadelphia’s past and present. \nGothic Revival Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion is the perfect venue to introduce the Haunted History of Philadelphia. Join us as Hitchens reads excerpts from his new book. SUMMARY:Literary Parlor - Tolstoy Selections
DESCRIPTION:Join bibliophile\, Kate Howe\, for a lively discussion about several works by Leo Tolstoy. Firstly\, a short story entitled “How Much Land Does a Man Need”  is an 1886 short story by Leo Tolstoy about a man who\, in his lust for land\, forfeits everything. Secondly\, the group will discuss The Kreutzer Sonata\, a novella named after Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata published in 1889 and promptly censored by Russian authorities. The work is an argument for the ideal of sexual abstinence and an in-depth first-person description of jealous rage. The main character\, Pozdnyshev\, relates the events leading up to his killing of his wife: in his analysis\, the root causes for the deed were the “animal excesses” and “swinish connection” governing the relation between the sexes.

SUMMARY:Deep Rivers Art Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the lives of 19th-century African American heroes through an art installation by Linda Sanders. Her art honors the achievements of historical figures highlighted in the Deep Rivers tour\, including Francis Johnson (musician and composer)\, John S. Trower (caterer and entrepreneur)\, Henry Ossawa Tanner (artist)\, and Eliza Greer (physician). Sanders will bring their stories to life through a mural installation that she will paint onsite at the Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion as an artist-in-residence. \nThe installation will be located in an unfurnished room on the second story of the Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion. The room will be transformed into a colorful space that immerses visitors in Sanders’ abstract graphics. Birch plywood panels will be mounted over the walls to create a smooth painting surface that will not interfere with the historic surface of the walls. On these panels\, Sanders will paint a continuous\, scenic mural in her signature style that reflects her appreciation for Cubism. \nThe party will be held in the gardens with summertime refreshments. Guests can view Linda’s mural in small groups. Admission is free of charge to anyone living within the 19144 zip code.

SUMMARY:Brandied Peaches and Ice Cream
DESCRIPTION:Join food historian Becky Diamond via ZOOM on Sunday\, August 28\, at 1:30 pm for “Brandied Peaches and Ice Cream.” \nBrandied peaches are one of the many fruit preserve recipes featured in Abby Fisher’s What Mrs. Fisher Knows About Old Southern Cooking\, the oldest known American cookbook written by a formerly enslaved person. John Trower was one of Philadelphia’s most successful 19th-century caterers\, with ice cream businesses in both Germantown and Ocean City\, NJ. Learn more about both culinary experts and their significance to African American foodways. Today ice cream is often embellished with fruity toppings such as brandied peaches. Discover the backstory of this idea and how it evolved into the ice cream sundae. Recipes for Abby’s brandied peaches and Anna Maxwell’s spiced peaches will be compared and adapted for today’s kitchens\, a perfect tie-in for National Peach Month. MAKE RESERVATIONS ONLINE

SUMMARY:Literary Parlor - Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands
DESCRIPTION:Written in 1857\, Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands is the autobiography of a Jamaican woman whose fame rivaled Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War. Seacole traveled widely before arriving in London\, where her offer to volunteer as a nurse in the war was met with racism and refusal. Undaunted\, she set out independently to the Crimea\, where she acted as doctor and “mother” to wounded soldiers while running her business\, the “British Hotel.” Told with energy\, warmth\, and humor\, her remarkable life story and accounts of hardships at the battlefront offer significant insights into the history of race politics.

SUMMARY:Popular Astronomy in 19th-century Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:“No Limit to Space” with Robert Hicks\, Ph.D.\nVisitors to Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion might discover a curious object in the children’s room\, a large 1871 cardboard planisphere that shows the stars\, a rotating disk adjustable to the appearance of the night sky at any date or time. Designed for schools and the curious public\, the planisphere speaks to the widespread interest in astronomy during the mid to late 1800s. This presentation surveys what discoveries were made in astronomy during the era and how it was promoted and taught. What did people then think about intelligent life elsewhere? The size and nature of the universe? Robert Hicks explores these topics through the work of a journalist who wrote the most popular guide to astronomy in America; the first professional woman astronomer and the first American scientist to discover a comet; and a lawyer\, astronomer\, and Civil War general who was the pre-eminent public lecturer on astronomy in the country. The presentation concludes with a virtual 1870s public observing night with a telescope! This event is offered virtually on zoom. Ticket holders will receive the zoom link on Friday and then once more on Saturday.
