Long-term Historic Masonry Conservation

August 10 @ 4:30 pm - 7:30 pm

$25

On the surface, restoration projects may appear straight forward and intuitive; but there’s no substitute for skill, experience, and the right materials to fit the purpose. To bridge the knowledge gap, LimeWorks.us founder Andy DeGruchy and conservation mason Chris Hertz will discuss the science behind breathable lime mortars while using the Mansion as an informal teaching example. Leading an interactive walk around the mansion exterior, Andy and Chris will point out and explain the potential causes of brick and stone deterioration; the properties and benefits of using natural hydraulic lime mortars for historic masonry restoration; the importance of matching existing mortar and joint profiles where encountered in historic projects; and how to recognize inappropriate, incompatible, and uncomplimentary repairs. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and bring a small mortar sample to receive a recommendation for matching materials. Light refreshments will be available and attendees may wander through the Victorian gardens and take a guided tour of the Mansion interior as time permits.
